The growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the justice system poses significant challenges for legal professionals, requiring an in-depth understanding of its potential and risks. This short course addresses this need by providing a practical and applied approach to the use of AI in the courts and other areas of the judicial system.
With a direct focus on technical, legal and ethical issues, the course will enable participants to acquire the essential skills to use AI ethically, responsibly and in accordance with the current legal framework, including the Artificial Intelligence Regulation (AI Regulation) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
This course is therefore an essential opportunity for judges, solicitors, legal professionals and others in the sector who wish to understand and integrate AI into their practice in a legitimate and informed manner, ensuring that technological innovation serves the fundamental principles of justice.

Objectives

This short course is aimed at professionals in the legal sector who wish to understand what artificial intelligence (AI) is, and its challenges and potential within the context of the justice system. The aim is to provide practical and applied training, enabling participants to acquire the necessary skills to use AI ethically, responsibly and in accordance with the current legal framework.

Throughout the course, participants will:

Understand the fundamentals of AI and its specific applications in the justice sector;
Analysise the risks associated with the use of AI, including a lack of explainability and biases in the systems used in courts;
Explore the legal framework for AI in the justice system, with a particular focus on the AI Regulation and the GDPR;
Discuss the ethical implications of using AI in legal interpretation and argumentation, as well as in the assessment of culpability;
Examine issues relating to the explainability of AI and the reasoning behind judicial decisions, from both a legal perspective and the technical perspective of AI itself.

The course takes a practical approach and is aimed at judges, lawyers, legal experts and other professionals in the sector who wish to learn how to use AI responsibly, maximising its potential without compromising the fundamental principles of justice, transparency and impartiality.

Magistrates (judges and prosecutors) who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of AI on judicial decision-making and the challenges of its explainability.
Lawyers interested in the use of AI in legal practice, AI-assisted legal argumentation and regulatory risk analysis.
Legal professionals and legal advisers who advise organisations and institutions on the application of AI in the justice sector.
Legal researchers and academics studying the intersection between AI, justice and regulation.
Court and public administration staff involved in the implementation of AI technologies within the judicial system.

A certificate of completion will be awarded to those who attend at least 75 per cent of the sessions.
