Carlos Carreiras Visits NOVA School of Law and Highlights Academic Future in Carcavelos
- 17 March 2026
NOVA School of Law welcomed Carlos Carreiras, the former Mayor of Cascais, who was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate by NOVA University Lisbon, one of the highest academic distinctions, reserved for individuals whose careers reflect the University’s values, particularly its commitment to science and public service.
The award was presented during a ceremony at the University Rectorate, attended by notable figures from academia, politics and civil society. This recognition highlights Carlos Carreiras’ public service career and his role in strengthening NOVA’s presence in the municipality of Cascais.
The University emphasised his contribution to establishing the region as a hub for knowledge, innovation, and the connection between academia, society, and the economy, describing it as “a territory of innovation, sustainability, social cohesion, and talent development, with a forward-looking vision, of which NOVA is now also a part”.
A close connection between NOVA and Cascais
This distinction also reflects the collaboration that has been strengthened over the years between the University and the municipality of Cascais, particularly regarding the creation and development of an academic ecosystem in the region.
The project gained international visibility with the establishment of the NOVA School of Business and Economics campus in Carcavelos and has since been extended to other University units, including NOVA School of Law, which will integrate into this growing academic environment while reinforcing collaboration with the University’s other schools.

The new location will facilitate deeper interdisciplinary synergies, bringing legal education and research closer to other fields of knowledge, as well as an international network of students, researchers and organisations.
Carlos Carreiras’ visit, following the conferment of the Honorary Doctorate, symbolises the long-standing relationship between the Faculty and the municipality, as well as recognising his pivotal role in developing NOVA School of Law into a European institution in the Knowledge Bay. This has helped to bridge the gap between academia and society, while contributing to the region’s sustainable development.
