The built environment is undergoing profound transformation, shaped by challenges ranging from urban development and housing to infrastructure, climate transition and emerging technologies. As these changes accelerate, understanding their impact on people, communities and human rights is becoming increasingly important for professionals working across different sectors.
The course International Certificate on Social Risk and Opportunity in the Built Environment brings together these perspectives, offering an interdisciplinary approach to one of the key challenges facing the built environment today: how to combine development and investment with respect for human rights, social inclusion and long-term sustainability.
The programme is the result of a partnership between the NOVA School of Law Executive Education and the Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB), bringing together international expertise and an academic perspective to explore the relationship between human rights and the built environment.

Target audience
The programme is aimed at professionals involved in the planning, financing, development and management of the built environment, including professionals in the fields of property, infrastructure, architecture, urban planning, construction and engineering, as well as finance and investment, human rights and sustainability. It is also aimed at representatives of the public sector, civil society and multilateral organisations, consultants and researchers.
Objectives
The programme offers participants an opportunity to broaden their understanding of social risks and opportunities in the built environment, combining different professional perspectives and exploring their practical implications across areas such as infrastructure, housing, investment, climate transition and technology.

Certification
The 2026 edition is supported by the Ove Arup Foundation and offers participants the opportunity to obtain a certificate jointly issued by NOVA School of Law Executive Education and IHRB, subject to successful completion of the programme.
A Global Programme in Lisbon
As part of the 2026 edition, participants will have the opportunity to join an optional in-person module at NOVA School of Law in Lisbon, on 5 and 6 November. This immersive experience will bring together participants and faculty for collaborative learning, exchange and networking, complementing the programme’s online sessions with an opportunity for in-person engagement.
