The Master’s in Law and Financial Markets is a product of an innovative partnership bringing together NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) and NOVA School of Law (NOVA Law).

Consistently ranked by Eduniversal among the top master’s courses in Western Europe, the Master’s in Law and Financial Markets offers students the challenge of an innovative set of courses in law and finance, opportunities to meet and network with leading financial institutions, to gain hands-on experience through an internship in a financial institution and to benefit from an international experience at a top university in Europe or beyond, through NOVA School of Law’s membership of the Themis Network.

This Program is aiming to deepen law graduate’s mastery of the law, particularly in those fields that have the closest bearing on financial markets and investments, as well as providing an insight into the organization and functioning of the general financial system, and the three main financial markets: banking, insurance and capital markets. The Program offers an opportunity to acquire key financial analysis and evaluation skills of the main financial instruments traded on the capital markets and to identify intervention strategies in capital markets. The Program aims to stimulate a critical and interdisciplinary approach to knowledge, providing lawyers with the necessary tools to solve complex problems or issue judgments on situations of incomplete information.

Candidates with a background in law will be given preference in admission. However, holders of any bachelor’s degree or equivalent are eligible to apply. We are keen to attract talented current or future professionals with an international focus who wish to prepare for a wide range of careers in the highly competitive finance sector.

The cycle of studies leading to obtaining a Master's degree in Law and Financial Markets is organized in four semesters, for a total of 120 ECTS.

The curricular component (1st and 2nd semesters) corresponds to 60 ECTS: 52 ECTS correspond to the 10 compulsory courses and 8 ECTS to the optional courses, chosen by each student among the courses offered by the course or others that are shown consistent with the objectives of this master's degree, with authorization from the Coordination.

The 3rd and 4th semesters are entirely dedicated to the elaboration of a scientific dissertation, a project work or an internship of a professional nature, which is the subject of a final report, corresponding to 60 ECTS.

How to Apply and Candidate Ranking
For the application to be considered complete, the candidate will have to fill out the form available on the NOVA IMS Applications Portal, as well as upload the Curriculum Vitae, choose the application course and pay the application fee in the same application.

The candidate selection process is carried out based on:

  • Final grade of the higher education course with which you are applying (50%);
  • Relevance and adequacy of the previous course for the master’s course (50%).


The jury assigns each candidate / a rating on a scale of 0 to 20, based on an analysis based on the candidate’s objectives and motivation (field “Objectives / motivation for applying to this program” on the Candidature Portal) and the curriculum vitae, and the members of the jury may decide to conduct interviews with all or some of the candidates. Candidates evaluated under this criterion with a rating lower than 9.5 will be automatically excluded.

Elements to be valued:

  • law degree;
  • for post-Bologna law graduates, a degree corresponding to at least 240 ECTS.



Application Fee
The application fee is 51 €. The application will only be considered submitted after the payment of the application fee within the stipulated period, non-refundable in case of withdrawal or non-admission to the course.


Registration Cost
After being admitted to the course and in the act of confirming the pre-registration (about 1 week after the disclosure of the admission result), students must make the payment of € 820, deductible in the amount of the fee and non-refundable in case of withdrawal .

Upon registration, students must make the following payments:

  • € 35 – referring to registration fees (value updated annually);
  • € 1.40 – for annual school insurance (amount updated annually).

The total amount of tuition fees for those who complete the master’s degree within the stipulated period is 6,200 €, of which 4,200 € correspond to the curricular part (1st year) and the remaining 2,000 € to the preparation of a dissertation, project work or professional internship (2nd year).


Tuition Payment Dates
The conditions to be able to apply are:

The tuition fee may be paid in full, in two or six installments, the payment dates being as follows:

  • Payment in full: from 25 to 30 September 2020.
  • Payment in two installments:
    • 1st From September 25 to 30, 2020 (corresponding to 100% of the 1st year tuition fee);
    • 2nd From 25th to 30th September 2021 (corresponding to 100% of the 2nd year tuition fee).
  • Payment in six installments
    • 1st From 25 to 30 September 2020 (corresponding to 25% of the 1st year tuition fee);
    • 2nd From 25th to 30th November 2020 (corresponding to 25% of the 1st year tuition fee);
    • 3rd From February 22 to 28, 2021 (corresponding to 25% of the 1st year tuition fee);
    • 4th From April 25 to 30, 2021 (corresponding to 25% of the 1st year tuition fee);
    • 5th From September 25th to 30th, 2021 (corresponding to 50% of the 2nd year tuition fee);
    • 6. From February 22 to 28, 2022 (corresponding to 50% of the 2nd year tuition fee).



Merit Scholarships and Discounts

  • Students whose final average of the access course to this Master is equal to or higher than 17 values (scale 17/20) or 8.5 (scale 5/10) benefit from a 50% discount on the tuition fee.
  • In the non-academic semester (dissertation), three merit scholarships will be awarded: one corresponding to a total exemption from tuition fees, which will be attributed to the best classification of the curricular phase, and two to the second and third best classifications, which will be awarded with a reduction of half the tuition fee.
  • Financial discount:
    • Students who choose to pay tuition fees in a single payment have a discount of 5% on the amount to be paid;
    • Students who choose to pay tuition fees in two payments have a 2.5% discount on the amount to be paid.
  • Students or former students (undergraduate, postgraduate, master’s and doctoral) of NOVA IMS or NOVA School of Law with a degree already completed at one of these institutions benefit from a 10% discount on the tuition fee, accumulated with the financial discount.
  • 25% discount, not combinable with other discounts, for members of:
    • Associação Sindical dos Juízes Portugueses;
    • Associação Sindical dos Magistrados do Ministério Público.
