NOVA School of Law and the Portuguese Navy strengthen their partnership in Maritime Security education

NOVA School of Law and the Portuguese Navy have consolidated their strategic partnership through the signing of a cooperation agreement that reinforces collaboration between the two institutions in the fields of teaching and research in Maritime Law and Economics.

The agreement ensures the continued coordination of the Maritime Security course, which forms part of the Master’s programme in Law and Economics of the Sea – Ocean Governance.. This programme is currently delivered in partnership between the NOVA School of Law and the Nova School of Business and Economics. This programme has been ranked by Eduniversal as the best in the world in the Maritime Management category.

The Portuguese Navy has delivered the teaching of this curricular unit since the 2022/23 academic year, and this year it is under the responsibility of Commodore Valente Tinoco and his team. This partnership has been recognised for its positive impact on the education of future experts in Maritime Law and Economics.

As part of this agreement, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CEMA), Jorge Manuel Nobre de Sousa, attended the inaugural lecture of the Maritime Security course. He emphasised the importance of this partnership in enhancing academic training and fostering relations between the Portuguese Navy and NOVA School of Law.

In addition to the teaching component, the agreement also provides for the following initiatives:

  • Student visits to Navy facilities to provide practical insight into its operations and structure;
  • Access to the Navy’s libraries and resources to support academic research;
  • Opportunities for course internships and project work to strengthen the link between theory and practice;
  • Academic excellence awards for the top-performing Master’s students;
  • The dissemination of recruitment opportunities within the Navy to the academic community.

Through this partnership, NOVA School of Law reaffirms its commitment to excellence in education by adopting an interdisciplinary approach that aligns with the needs of the maritime sector, thereby preparing highly qualified legal professionals to address the challenges of ocean governance.
