data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Given the commitment of NOVA School of Law to SDG 14 to Protect Marine Life, and our focus on the study of issues related to sea governance, <a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/meet-the-ocean-now\/\">we could not fail to be present at the United Nations Ocean Conference<\/a>, which took place between 27th June and 1st July, at Parque das Na\u00e7\u00f5es, in Lisbon.<br \/><br \/>As such, we were present at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unl.pt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOVA University Lisbon<\/a>&#8216;s stand, located under the roof of the Portuguese Pavilion, where, during the event, we had the opportunity to present to visitors our educational courses and research centres devoted to Sea and Ocean affairs.<br \/><br \/>On June 30th, we promoted a<strong> special event<\/strong>, where <strong>the undergraduate degree project of NOVA University of Lisbon dedicated to the Ocean was presented to the public for the first time.<\/strong><br \/><br \/>The side event \u00abMeet the Ocean Now\u00bb, involved three different phases: <strong>a plenary session and two workshops<\/strong>, each of which promoted the discussion and reflection on issues relating to the Ocean, requiring the participation of professors from different fields, from national and international backgrounds.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-767e670 elementor-widget elementor-widget-ekit_wb_28929\" data-id=\"767e670\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"ekit_wb_28929.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"normal-titleh2 preto regular-text\">Plenary Session<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5381ba6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5381ba6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>At the plenary session, the <strong>Bachelor&#8217;s of the Ocean<\/strong> was presented, a degree totally dedicated to the Ocean, which is being prepared by<strong> NOVA University Lisbon<\/strong> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualg.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of the Algarve<\/a> for 2023 and which involves the following faculties: <strong>NOVA School of Law<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novasbe.unl.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOVA SBE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.unl.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOVA School of Science and Technology,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fcsh.unl.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOVA FCSH &#8211; Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novaims.unl.pt\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOVA IMS &#8211; Information Management School<\/a>; and, from the Algarve, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fct.ualg.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Sciences and Technology<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/fe.ualg.pt\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Faculty of Economics<\/a>.<br \/><br \/>To talk about this pioneering degree, which aims to prepare Ocean experts through <strong>a broad and holistic approach to the Ocean<\/strong> and its importance for the development of education focused on the Ocean, we had the participation of significant names, such as <strong>Isabel Rocha<\/strong> (Vice-Rector of NOVA), <strong>Paulo \u00c1guas<\/strong> (Rector of UALG), <strong>Assun\u00e7\u00e3o Cristas<\/strong> (NOVA School of Law), <strong>Tiago Pitta e Cunha<\/strong> (Blue Ocean Foundation), <strong>Maria Damanaki<\/strong> (former EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries), <strong>Ant\u00f3nio Nogueira Leite<\/strong> (F\u00f3rum Oceano) and <strong>M\u00e1rio Sim\u00f5es Marques<\/strong> (Portuguese Hydrographic Institute).<br \/><br \/>For the closing remarks, we had the honour of the participation of <strong>Jos\u00e9 Maria Costa<\/strong>, the Portuguese Secretary of State for Maritime Affairs.<br \/><br \/>The various speakers reinforced the<strong> importance of new initiatives such as the Bachelor&#8217;s of the Ocean<\/strong>, which <strong>aims to fill a gap identified in the academy and to present an innovative approach to multidisciplinary education of the Ocean<\/strong>. Hence, the identification and creation of new opportunities as well as solutions is expected, to face the challenges that lie ahead. Finally, NOVA University of Lisbon and the University of the Algarve were congratulated by all participants for their initiative.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div development&#8221;.<br \/><br \/>With a multidisciplinary view on the subject, involving Professors from different academic backgrounds, <strong>the debate focused on the analysis of public policies and how law is an essential tool in the promotion and inclusion of sustainable economic development<\/strong>. Conference<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76a6b54 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"76a6b54\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It was a great honour to be a part of this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/conferences\/ocean2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Conference<\/a> dedicated to the Ocean, which discussed the need for urgent and concrete actions to address the Ocean crisis and which ended with <strong>the adoption of a political declaration on Ocean advocacy, which is known as the &#8220;Lisbon Declaration&#8221;.<\/strong><br \/><br \/>The declaration assumes &#8220;a dire state of the Ocean&#8221; and a &#8220;collective failure&#8221; to achieve several of the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on marine life, admitting the need for &#8220;more ambition to address the dire state of the Ocean&#8221; and renewing by more than 150 UN member states the<strong> &#8220;commitment to take urgent action and to cooperate at the global, regional and sub-regional levels to achieve all the targets as soon as possible and without further delay&#8221;.<\/strong><br \/><br \/>This is good news for what is the beginning of a new chapter in global action for the Ocean, <strong>based on a promise of &#8220;transformative change&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-db7be08 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"db7be08\"
