This PhD Workshop will take place online and it is an opportunity for researchers and PhD students to meet up and foster a scientific community at NOVA School of Law.<\/p>\n

In this PhD Workshop, Maria Meruje, PhD Candidate at Nova School of Law, will speak about “Examining International, European and National Nuclear Law: How could Portugal as a non nuclear country harmonize its Nuclear Law?” She will be joined by a discussant: Dr. José Gonçalves Marques, researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico.<\/p>\n

Abstract<\/p>\n

Since the nineties the International Nuclear Law has had an enormous transformation due two new Safety Nuclear Conventions. The legal regimes established by these two Conventions are today considered fundamental for achieving a high level of nuclear and radiation safety. The legal regime established by the two Conventions were adopted and incorporated by the last three EURATOM Directives (2011\/70; 2013\/59 and 2014\/87). All the European Member States have been undertaking efforts to harmonize its national legal infrastructure and make it a robust answer to the new technologies that utilize nuclear and radioactive materials for peaceful purposes. Portugal is not an exception, but is the national nuclear law regime in place harmonized? Is it sufficient and proportional to the domestic needs?<\/p>\n
