This was a historic moment for the field of human rights and business, ESG and the search for sustainable and responsible businesses that respect human rights, decent work and environmental standards along the global value chain. The Directive is based on a study co-authored by <a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/claire-bright\/\">Claire Bright<\/a>: European Commission, Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers, Torres-Cort\u00e9s, F.; Salinier, C.; Deringer, H.; Bright, Claire et al., Study on due diligence requirements through the supply chain \u2013 Final report, EU Publications, 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/data.europa.eu\/doi\/10.2838\/39830\">https:\/\/data.europa.eu\/doi\/10.2838\/39830<\/a>. This study focuses on due diligence requirements to identify, prevent, mitigate and account for human rights abuses, including children\u2019s rights and fundamental freedoms, serious physical and health risks and environmental damage, including climate change.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/laura-inigo-alvarez\/\">Laura \u00cd\u00f1igo \u00c1lvarez<\/a> organised a symposium that was referenced in the <strong>OECD Annual Report on the Activity of National Contact Points for Responsible Business Conduct 2021<\/strong>, p. 45. She also participated in the peer review process of the <strong>Portuguese National Contact Point on Responsible Business Conduct<\/strong>, providing several recommendations for its improvement.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1962\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1962\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\" class=\"elementor-toggle-title\">Human rights in situations of armed conflict<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1962\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1962\"><p>In 2023, a new United Nations mechanism to <strong>search for the missing in Syria<\/strong> was voted on and approved by the General Assembly. This mechanism is the result of the work of <strong>Jeremy Sarkin<\/strong> with Syrian NGOs since 2020 and his book on the need for such a mechanism and how it could function.<\/p><p>The mechanism will be established soon and <strong>will help determine the fate and whereabouts of the possibly 1 million people in Syria who have been detained and disappeared since 2011.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1963\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1963\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened\"><i class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-opened fas fa-caret-up\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"\" class=\"elementor-toggle-title\">Fight against organised crime<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1963\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"3\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1963\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/felipe-pathe-duarte\/\">Felipe Path\u00e9 Duarte<\/a> acted as a Consultant in 2020 for the <strong>United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to Counter Violent Extremism in Mozambique<\/strong> and in 2023 for the <strong>Council of Europe<\/strong> on the use of digital tools for disaster risk communication. For the <strong>Secretariat of the EUR-OPA Major Risks Agreement<\/strong>, he wrote a report whose recommendations were adopted at the 80th meeting of the Committee of Permanent Correspondents and Directors of Specialised Centres (Joint Meeting).<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1964\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1964\" aria-expanded=\"false\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon elementor-toggle-icon-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-toggle-icon-closed\"><i class=\"fas fa-caret-right\"><\/i><\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span European Parliament on <strong>European Banking Union<\/strong> accountability and contributed to a study for the <strong>European Data Protection Supervisor<\/strong> on compliance with treaties.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1965\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"5\" role=\"tab\" of <strong>ERSE (Entidade Reguladora dos Servi\u00e7os Energ\u00e9ticos)<\/strong>: a study on the legality of the general conditions of the standard contracts presented by electricity suppliers, which served as the basis for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erse.pt\/media\/zlzcnzdr\/recomenda%C3%A7%C3%A3o-condi%C3%A7%C3%B5es-contratuais_vfinal.pdf\">ERSE Recommendation No. 1\/2019<\/a>, and a <strong>draft of the common regulation on commercial relations for the electricity and natural gas sectors<\/strong> (which resulted in <a href=\"https:\/\/diariodarepublica.pt\/dr\/detalhe\/regulamento\/1129-2020-152518409\">Regulation No. 1129\/2020, of 30 December<\/a>).<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-toggle-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-title-1966\" class=\"elementor-tab-title\" data-tab=\"6\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1966\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1966\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/margarida-lima-rego\/\">Margarida Lima Rego<\/a> coordinated the project and <a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/veronica-corcodel\/\">Veronica Corcodel<\/a> was part of the team behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/project-multiversity-white-paper-on-multiple-and-intersectional-discrimination-2\/\">Multiversity Project | White Paper on Multiple and Intersectional Discrimination<\/a>, which was launched in October 2022 with the aim of producing a scientifically based recommendation, based on multidisciplinary knowledge, to level and harmonise anti-discrimination protection in Portugal, taking into account sequential, additive and intersectional multiple discrimination.<\/p><p>The project resulted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/24_057-Livro-A4_Livro-Branco-Sobre-Discriminacao_210x297_V5_EBOOK.pdf\">&#8216;White Paper on Multiple and Intersectional Discrimination&#8217;<\/a>, presented in <a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/livro-branco-sobre-discriminacao-propoe-a-criacao-da-agencia-para-a-igualdade\/\">March 2024<\/a>, which contains its main findings and recommendations, as well as a proposal for a preliminary draft of a comprehensive anti-discrimination law and the creation of a single institution to promote equality and prevent discrimination, the Equality Agency.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0d99148 elementor-widget elementor-widget-ekit_wb_28992\" data-id=\"0d99148\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"ekit_wb_28992.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/nova-refugee-clinic-legal-clinic\/\">NOVA Refugee and Migration Clinic<\/a>), Racism and Xenophobia (<a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/observatorio-do-racismo-e-xenofobia-investigacao\/\">Observatory against Racism and Xenophobia<\/a>), Intellectual Property in a society aiming to achieve sustainability (<a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/nova-knowledge-centre-on-intellectual-property-sustainable-innovation-ipsi\/\">NOVAIPSI<\/a>) or consumer conflict mediation processes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cienciavitae.pt\/portal\/pt\/D113-4128-5C1C\">Lu\u00eds Cabral de Oliveira<\/a> was awarded the <strong>Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation\/Portuguese Academy of History Prize<\/strong>, in 2021, for his work on the History of Portugal\u2019s Presence in the World.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/nausica-palazzo\/\">Nausica Palazzo<\/a> was recognised as a<strong> Young Leaders Academy Fellow by the EUTOPIA Alliance of Universities<\/strong>, in 2023.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/nausica-palazzo\/\">Nausica Palazzo<\/a> was also Path\u00e9-Duarte<\/a> was honoured with the 2021 <strong>ASMEA Research Award<\/strong> for his article \u201c<em>Jihad, Gas and Governance \u2013 The Insurgency in Cabo Delgado,
