class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\"><div class=\"section\"><div class=\"layoutArea\"><div class=\"column\"><p>NOVA School of Law\u2019s 3rd Cycle Programme in Law is a <strong>four-year programme leading to a PhD degree in Law<\/strong>. The Programme comprises <strong>a taught component (over three semesters)<\/strong> where advanced legal studies are carried out with an interdisciplinary focus. This period also provides training in research methodologies and other complementary skills. Towards the end of the taught component of the Programme, candidates must <strong>prepare and publicly defend their thesis project<\/strong>. During the remaining part of the Programme (comprising five further semesters), candidates must complete their research under the guidance of their supervisor, culminating in the<strong> preparation and defence of their doctoral thesis<\/strong>. The Programme is internationally oriented. Its main language of instruction is English.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><p>In 2014, FCT, the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (the national funding agency for science, research and technology) awarded the NOVA School of Law Third Cycle Programme the <strong>prestigious FCT PhD programme status<\/strong>. It is thus far the only public higher education institution to have been bestowed with this distinction in the field of legal studies. FCT\u2019s generous funding of this Programme has <strong>allowed NOVA School of Law to award over 50 research grants to some of its most talented doctoral students.<\/strong> Year upon year, we attract a talented, multicultural cohort of candidates from all corners of the world. This funding also <strong>allows a good portion of our annual student intake to carry out their research full-time<\/strong>. This has proved to be an essential element in the creation of a vibrant and close-knit community of doctoral students, who are active in many of NOVA Law School\u2019s research initiatives.<\/p><p>The Programme admits 25 doctoral candidates each academic year. Numbers are low and therefore admission into the Programme is highly competitive, as NOVA School of Law seeks to ensure that every doctoral candidate is afforded sufficient individualised attention Failure to pay tuition fees within the time limits indicated results in an increase in the amount to be settled and\/or the suspension of enrolment and registration, as well as the invalidity of all curricular acts practised in the academic year in which the payment dates are not respected.<br \/><br \/><\/p><h3>Payment by instalments<\/h3><p><strong><br \/>Annual tuition fees for the taught component and research phase<\/strong><br \/>The annual tuition fees for the taught component can be paid in 10 instalments<\/p><ul><li><strong>10 instalments:<\/strong> 1st instalment of 20% of the total amount paid at the time of enrolment, and the remaining amount in 9 instalments paid between the 1st and 10th of the months of September to May.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Tuition fee for an additional Research Phase semester<\/strong><\/p><ul><li><strong>4 instalments:<\/strong> 25% of the total amount paid at registration, remaining instalments:<ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>\u00a01st semester: between the 1st and 10th (October, November, January);<\/li><li>2nd semester: between the 1st and 10th (March, April, May).<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><h3><br \/>FCT Scholarships<\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/novalaw.unl.pt\/en\/cedis\/\">CEDIS &#8211; NOVA School of Law&#8217;s Research &amp; Development Centre<\/a> will, expectedly, have PhD Scholarships funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology to be awarded to PhD students of recognised merit who are admitted to and attend NOVA School of Law&#8217;s PhD programme in Law.<\/p><p>Information on the procedure and deadlines for applying for these scholarships will be publicised immediately after the results of the evaluation process underway at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fct.pt\/en\/\">Foundation for Science and Technology<\/a>\u00a0are known.<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3>Merit Awards<\/h3><p>The number of awards is established annually by the NOVA School of Law Board. Merit awards for admission to the Phd in Law are awarded as follows:<\/p><ul><li>The selection panel for admission to the PhD in Law at NOVA School of Law submits a reasoned proposal with the candidates it proposes to award a merit award, taking into account the admission classification for the PhD.<\/li><li>The decision on the awarding of merit awards is made by the Merit Awards Jury. class=\"s1\">Instructions for submitting the <a href=\"https:\/\/netpa.novalaw.unl.pt\/cssnet\/page\">application (online)<\/a>:<\/span><\/h4><p>The application is submitted online through <a href=\"https:\/\/netpa.novalaw.unl.pt\/\">NetPA<\/a> by filling in a form and uploading the necessary documents, namely:<\/p><ul><li>Online submission of a simple digital copy of the citizen card or passport (international applicants)<\/li><li>Payment of the application fee through the PayPal, Visa, MBway or Multibanco references on the system: 70.00\u20ac (non-refundable), validated by the system in few minutes.<\/li><li>For candidates who present identification documents with a nationality other than Portuguese or EU, a declaration, under oath, stating that the candidate has Portuguese nationality or is covered by one of the exceptions in Article 2(2) of Regulation No. 687\/2020 of 20 August, which, under the terms of Decree-Law No. 36\/2014 of 10 March, excludes them from
