Andrea Longo joined NOVA School of Law in January 2026 as Assistant Professor in Public Law and coordinates the Master’s in Law and Economics of the Sea jointly with Professor Assunçâo Cristas. He’s also a member of the NOVA Ocean Knowledge Centre.

Andrea holds a BA in Social Sciences with a focus on Middle Eastern Politics and Arabic (Sciences Po Paris, Menton Campus, 2014), a full-cycle Law degree (Turin University, 2018), and a PhD in Public, European and International Law (University of Milano-Bicocca and Université Côte d’Azur, 2023). His research on the enforcement of human rights on-board commercial fishing vessels sits at the intersection of the law of the sea, international human rights law and sustainability.

He is co-convenor of the Law of the Sea Interest Group of the European Society of International Law. He’s also an active member of the International Law Association Committee on Protection of People at Sea, and co-lead for the Trafficking and Forced Labour sub-working group of the COST Action ‘BlueRights’ (CA23103), two international networks of practitioners and academics addressing core issues relating to the protection of human rights at sea.

He previously worked as postdoctoral researcher in the UK. In April 2023 he joined One Ocean Hub (University of Strathclyde), where he engaged in collaborative inter-disciplinary research on the systemic interpretation of State obligations regarding climate change, marine biodiversity and human rights. In February 2024 he joined the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS, University of London) to conduct research aiming to unpack the link between the principle of freedom of the seas and the historical slave trade and appreciate its contribution to today’s human rights violations at sea. At SOAS, he obtained a grant from the SOAS Impact Acceleration Account to conduct impact-oriented activities on human rights abuses on-board commercial fishing vessels, including forms of modern slavery. Prior to joining NOVA School of Law, he was a Guest Researcher at the University of Basel, Chair of Public Law.

Andrea is particularly interested in real-life applications of the law. Between August 2021 and April 2022 he took part in the ITLOS/Nippon Foundation Capacity-Building and Training Programme on Dispute Settlements Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He was admitted to the Italian Bar (Turin) in October 2021 and worked as external consultant for human rights and environmental NGOs.
