Vera Lúcia Raposo selected as consultant for European project on discrimination and AI in public administrations

Vera Lúcia Raposo, Professor and Subdirector of NOVA School of Law, has been selected as a consultant for an international project by the Council of Europe aimed at combating discrimination in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in public administrations.

The project, entitled “Defending equality and non-discrimination by Equality Bodies with regard to Artificial Intelligence (AI) in public administrations“, will run until August 2026 and aims to enable bodies to address the challenges posed by AI systems, which are increasingly present in public administrations and may give rise to discrimination.

Co-funded by the European Union, the project responds to Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 and the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, which aim to regulate the use of human-centred AI in accordance with human rights, democracy and the rule of law, with a particular focus on the role of equality bodies across the EU in combating discrimination based on sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation.
Training initiatives, the exchange of good practice, the development of action lines and evaluation tools are planned.

Professor Vera Lúcia Raposo’s participation in this project reinforces our commitment to the European agenda to protect human rights and promote equality, especially in an increasingly digitalised world.
