Frederico Costa Pinto is Associate Professor (Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure) and President of the Pedagogical Council of the NOVA School of Law.
He was Director of the Legal Department (1992-1995) and is Advisor to the Board of Directors (1996-2020) of the Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
He has a Law Degree (1986, FDUL), a Master in Law (1991, FDUL) and a PhD in Law (2013, FDUNL), with dissertations in Criminal Law.
He is a member of the Criminal Investigation Group (CEDIS, FDUNL) and Deputy Director of Themis (FDUNL Magazine). He is a member of the Scientific Council and a permanent collaborator on several national and foreign magazines: Revista Portuguesa de Ciência Criminal, Revista Penal (Huelva/Salamanca), Cuadernos de Politica Criminal, Revista de Direito Financeiro e Mercado de Capitais and Revista de Derecho, Empresa y Sociedade.
He collaborates regularly with CEJ and PGR and with several Portuguese and foreign universities.
He was a grant holder of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with several research stays at the Max-Planck Institut für ausländisches und internationales Strafrecht, in Freiburg (Germany).
He has organised more than 100 conferences and has published around 100 studies on criminal law theory and criminal responsibility, criminal procedure, history of criminal law and criminal procedure, criminal evidence and defence rights, economic crimes, freedom of the press, administrative offences and supervision of the financial system.
He has participated in several legislative reforms of sanctioning law in the financial sector.
He has participated in over 20 juries of doctoral examinations at the invitation of a number of Portuguese Universities.
He has supervised more than 60 Master’s dissertations.
