NOVA School of Law and the Supreme Court of Justice Sign Cooperation Agreement in the field of Law, Technology and Artificial Intelligence

The NOVA School of Law and the Supreme Court of Justice have signed a cooperation agreement that strengthens their joint commitment to researching, training in, and debating the legal implications of technology, with a particular focus on the application of Artificial Intelligence within the judicial system.

The agreement was formalized by Professor Margarida Lima Rego, Dean of the Faculty, and Judge João Cura Mariano, President of the Supreme Court of Justice.

This agreement forms part of the AI Justice LAB project, an innovative, interdisciplinary academic initiative that aims to promote research into, and raise awareness of, the ethical and legal challenges associated with technology in the justice sector.

The cooperation between the two institutions includes joint studies, research projects, conferences, seminars and training and postgraduate courses. It also provides for cooperation in scientific publications and the shared use of facilities and equipment, whenever possible, to support these joint initiatives.

The protocol further strengthens the link to the work carried out by the Supreme Court of Justice at the international level, particularly regarding the creation of the Ibero-American Code of Ethics for Artificial Intelligence in the Judiciary, which is currently being updated and adapted for the Portuguese context.

Initially valid for one year and renewable by mutual agreement, this agreement represents another step towards deepening the dialogue between academia and judicial institutions in pursuit of a justice system that is more ethical, efficient, and technologically prepared to meet future challenges.
