The impact of the rise of interest rates

November 9, 2022 | 6 p.m.

After a 14-year decline, 6 of which in negative territory, since February 2022, we have witnessed a consistent rise in Euribor rates, which today reach values of around 2.8% (12 months) and 2.1% (6 months).

It is in this context that NOVA School of Law invites everyone to a talk on the rise in interest rates and, in particular, on their impact on credit agreements. The main players in the banking market will take part in this conversation chaired by the partner of the Finance Department of SRS Legal, such as the Central Bank of Portugal, the Portuguese association of banks, DECO, Novobanco, a significant credit institution, as well as an economist from Nova SBE, specialist in this area

Goals of the talk

The talk will focus on interest rate increases (current and foreseen future increases) and its impact on credit agreements, with a special focus on consumer credit.

Answers to the following questions will be the core of the talk: “Why are interests rates suddenly increasing?”; “How are banks reacting?”; “What are the bank associations doing?”; “Will the supervisors have any intervention in this matter?”; “Should they have an intervention?“; “What should debtors, in particular consumers, do to mitigate the negative impact of the increase of interest rates?
