Biographical Note | Pedagogical Experience

José Manuel Matos Ribeiro da Fonseca started his academic career on 1982 at ISEL where he teached until 1992. Since 1992 he is teaching at the NOVA School of Sciences and Technology (NOVA SST). From 1990 to 2014 he was also invited lecturer at the Air Force Academy where he was responsible for several courses in the Digital Systems area. He obtained his PhD on Electrical Engineering specialty Robotics and Integrated Manufacturing by Universidade Nova de Lisboa on the 10th May 2001 and his Aggregation on 22th January 2016. Is currently Associate Professor with Aggregation at the Electrical Engineering Department of NOVA SST where is teaching since its foundation in 1993. He is also invited Professor at NOVA School of Law since 2019 where is responsible for two programming courses.

At NOVA SST he created and is responsible for several courses in the area of sensorial processing and real-time processing with special emphasis on intelligent image processing and machine learning. He was founder and president of the NOVA SST Alumni Association from 2008 to 2020. Is currently consultant of Culturgest for the restauration of technological art and senior researcher of Uninova where he coordinates the CA3 – Computational Intelligence Research Group.

Since his PhD supervised/co-supervised 10 PhD Thesis, 76 MSc Thesis and 35 Final Diploma Projects. He has participated on more than ten European Projects as researcher and coordinator of the FCT/UNL participation and has been Principal Researcher of several FCT Projects in the remote sensing and biomedical area. Published more than 150 papers, founded a spin-off company and is co-author of a National Industrial Patent
