Counsellor Judge João Cura Mariano is the new President of the Supreme Court

João Cura Mariano, Counsellor Judge and Professor at NOVA School of Law, was elected this Wednesday, 15th May, as the new President of the Supreme Court of Justice, also inherently assuming the presidency of the Superior Council of the Judiciary.

About João Cura Mariano

João Cura Mariano is a visiting professor at NOVA School of Law, where he has taught declaratory civil procedure to several generations of NOVA lawyers. Between 2007 and 2016, João Cura Mariano was a judge at the Constitutional Court, having worked in the Courts of Appeal of Coimbra and Oporto, and in 2017 he was a member of the Advisory Council of the Attorney General’s Office.

Previously, he worked in various courts in Coimbra, Guarda, Marinha Grande, Lisbon and Cascais. At that time, he taught civil law at the Centre for Judicial Studies, the magistrates’ school.

He holds a law degree from the University of Coimbra and a master’s degree in civil law from the Portuguese Catholic University. He joined the judiciary in 1986.
