Artificial Intelligence in Justice: Tools and Challenges for Legal Professionals
Presentation
The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the justice system means that legal professionals must understand its potential benefits and risks. This short course takes a practical, applied approach to using AI in courts and the judicial system, addressing technical, legal, and ethical issues. Participants will learn how to integrate AI into their practice in an ethical and responsible manner, in compliance with the AI Regulation, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the fundamental principles of justice.
This practical course is aimed at magistrates, lawyers, jurists and other legal professionals who want to learn how to use AI responsibly, while maximising its potential and upholding the fundamental principles of justice, transparency and impartiality.

Aim of the course
The aim of the course is to provide practical and applied training, enabling participants to acquire the skills necessary to use AI ethically, responsibly and in accordance with the current legal framework.
Throughout the course, participants will:
- Understand the fundamentals of AI and its specific applications in the justice sector;
- Analyse the risks associated with the use of AI, including lack of explainability and bias in systems used in courts;
- Explore the legal framework for AI in justice, with a particular focus on the AI Regulation and the GDPR;
- Discuss the ethical implications of using AI in legal interpretation and argumentation, as well as in the assessment of guilt;
- Examine issues related to the explainability of AI and the reasoning behind judicial decisions, both from a legal perspective and from the technical perspective of AI itself.

The course is aimed at:
- Magistrates (judges and prosecutors) who wish to deepen their understanding of the impact of AI on judicial decision-making and the challenges of its explainability.
- Lawyers interested in the use of AI in forensic practice, AI-assisted legal reasoning and regulatory risk analysis.
- Lawyers and legal advisors who advise organisations and institutions on the application of AI in the justice sector.
- Researchers and academics in law who study the intersection between AI, justice and regulation.
- Court and public administration officials dealing with the implementation of AI technologies in the judicial system.
