NOVA Dispute Resolution Forum

NOVA Dispute Resolution Forum is a knowledge centre dedicated to research and training in the field of dispute resolution.

The centre has a unified and integrated focus on dispute resolution, reflecting the idea that motivates us that the various ways of resolving disputes should be seen as tools that together form the solution for managing conflict in society.

Arbitration and mediation are often presented as alternative ways of resolving disputes. However, the use of the term “alternative” refers to the idea of duality, to the need to choose between the traditional system and the alternative, which raises the question of which of the two is best.

At NOVA Dispute Resolution Forum, we argue that the question is not which is the best means of dispute resolution in general, but rather which is the most appropriate means for resolving each conflict.

Civil proceedings, arbitration, mediation, negotiation and all other forms of dispute resolution are part of a whole that should be considered, discussed and taught as such.

This Centre provides a space for such discussion, which is intended to be an open dialogue with the academic community and also with professionals, businesses and society.

The Centre is divided into four areas: Civil Procedure and Insolvency, Commercial Arbitration, Public and Investment Arbitration, and Mediation.
