Margarida Lima Rego elected Dean of NOVA School of Law

Margarida Lima Rego was, this Monday, elected Dean of NOVA School of Law by the School Council for the four-year term 2022-2026, succeeding Mariana França Gouveia.

For the next four years, Margarida Lima Rego has established priorities to consolidate research carried out by NOVA School of Law, which will be strengthened and affirmed by the international profile of the Faculty.

Over the last few years, NOVA School of Law has been consolidating its position in the teaching of Law in Portugal, and it is currently the most sought after law school in the national competition for access to higher education, which positively reflects its efforts. For the future, we intend to continue what we have achieved and to reaffirm the disruptive character that is part of our genesis. We want to prepare better jurists, capable of responding to the challenges of the future“, states Margarida Lima Rego.

Jorge Morais Carvalho, who was already a member of the previous Board, is also part of her team, joining Claire Bright and Joana Farrajota as Vice Deans.

Margarida Lima Rego is Associate Professor with Aggregation at NOVA School of Law, where she has been regularly teaching since 2005. She has been Vice Dean since 2018. She coordinates the NOVA Knowledge Centre for Data-Driven Law and the PhD Program in Law. She currently teaches the subjects “Law of Obligations and Difficult Cases” on the bachelor’s degree, is the holder of a “Jean Monnet Module in EU Insurance Law”, holds a master’s degree, and PhD, and is responsible for teaching “Private Law”.

Her main areas of practice are civil and commercial law. She was Of Counsel at Morais Leitão, where she coordinated the transversal group of insurance, reinsurance and pension funds, having left the firm in July 2019 to dedicate herself fully to her academic career. She maintains some legal advisory activity, being regularly consulted on various matters of Portuguese and Lusophone Law, having contributed to the resolution of disputes before the courts of various jurisdictions in Europe, Africa and North and South America.

Furthermore, she is a member of the Board of Appeal of the European Supervisory Authorities. She is President of AIDA Portugal, the Portuguese section of the International Association of Insurance Law, member of the Executive Committee and Scientific Council of AIDA Europe, the Scientific Council of the Ibero-Latin American Committee of AIDA and the Presidential Council of AIDA World. She is President of the Portuguese section of the Law and Commercial Practice Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce.

The inauguration of the new board is scheduled for October 20th, 2022.
